        中新社香港9月23日電 諾貝爾物理學獎得主、“光纖之父”高錕23日在香港離世,享年84歲。

        香港特區行政長官林鄭月娥23日表示,高錕教授是香港人的驕傲,對他的辭世深感哀痛,謹代表香港特區政府,向他的家人致以深切慰問。

        香港中文大學校長段崇智教授表示,高教授是出類拔萃的學者,也是高等教育界高瞻遠矚的領袖。他作為港中大第三任校長,在任內積極推動大學整體發展,建立穩固基礎,為有才之士開拓發展空間,成就超卓。高教授的離世對港中大、香港及全球學術界均是重大損失,謹代表中大教職員、同學及校友向高教授的家人致以深切慰問。

        高錕1933年11月在上海出生,祖籍江蘇金山市。1949年,高錕進入香港圣若瑟書院,之后到英國升學和工作。1966年,他首度提出光導纖維在通訊上應用的基本原理,并開發了實現光通訊所需的輔助系統,促成互聯網的出現。1970年,高錕回港出任香港中文大學電子系創系(現稱電子工程學系)教授,1987年至1996年出任香港中文大學校長,1996年當選為中國科學院外籍院士。2009年高錕獲頒諾貝爾物理學獎,以表揚其在光學通信領域的突破性成就。

        2004年初,高錕被證實患上早期阿茲海默癥,為協助阿茲海默癥患者和家屬,高錕及夫人黃美蕓成立高錕慈善基金。

        在高錕夫婦2010年的一封公開信中,他們寫道:“(高錕)在香港就讀高中、也曾在中大執教鞭、當校長,并在這里退休,在香港生活逾三十載,是個名副其實的香港人。”

        林鄭月娥在悼詞中說:“高錕教授是開發和應用光纖技術的先驅,為現代通訊科技帶來革命性的變化,對香港、國際,以至全球人類,作出巨大貢獻。”

        林鄭月娥表示,高錕教授對香港的科研發展亦高瞻遠矚,力促成立香港科學園,為香港今日的創科發展奠下穩固基礎。

        最后她表示:“高錕教授出類拔萃,是香港人的驕傲。我對他的辭世,深感哀痛。我謹代表香港特別行政區政府,向他的家人致以深切慰問。”
